Naked when working from home?

Two independent surveys found that between 11 percent and 29 percent of people world wide like to work naked when working from home.

The surveys were carried out during the pandemic period where most companies requested staff to work from home. Among people, who prefer to wear clothes, the result has come as a surprise. For naturists, not surprising at all.

In the US, the company Coupon Follow decided to see just how casual people were getting. The result of this survey was written up by Scripps Media Inc. and shared widely on regular media and Facebook.

Michael Parrish DuDell, Coupon Follow's Chief Strategy Officer, explains that the idea was to get a snapshot of how people are dressing these days, how much money they're spending on clothes and what they like to wear.

"We did find that 29 percent of workers work naked when working from home. Did that surprise me? That’s probably one of the words I would associate with my response to that. No, it didn’t surprise me. I think what surprised me is that people were so honest about the fact that they were working naked while working from home. I imagine that people weren’t working the full day naked. My guess is that there were some experiences where perhaps they had to and they answered the question with that in mind," Michael Parrish DuDell is quoted in the article.

Coupon Follow's survey covered 1,000 people that had previously been sitting in an office almost every day working who were now all working from home. They were aged from 30s to 70s, worked in different parts of the United States and within a wide range of industries.

The other research was commissioned by the global cyber security company Kaspersky. The scope of the research was to seek to understand the key drivers of the future of work, and "uses these insights to offer forward-thinking, actionable advice to inspire better and sustainable ways of working in a changed world," as explained in the survey.

The Kaspersky research studied the behaviors of 8,000 workers at Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Speaking of the opportunities opened up by working from home, 11% of respondents said they liked working without clothes. Other novelties favored by employees included weekday lie-ins (36%) and working outside in the garden or on a balcony (27%).

The trend is confirmed by Barefeet Naturist Resort in Bangkok, one of the member resorts of Naturist Association Thailand.

"During Covid, a lot of members started to bring their laptops to Barefeet and sat working naked here for half a day or even a full day," says owner Disraporn Yatprom of Barefeet Co., Ltd.

"Now that the crisis is over, they still continue working naked from Barefeet. It is nice, when they take a break, they can go for a swim, have a sunbath, or chat with some of the other naturists."

"When they have to go on camera, it is fun to see them put on a shirt and sometimes even a necktie and otherwise wear nothing at all," she laughs.

In the Kaspersky study, aside from working in the nude, which is still far from mainstream, the majority of respondents benefitted from simply working in comfortable clothes: 48% got used to this lifestyle and would like to make it the norm in the future. Saying goodbye to long commutes also made employees happier as they could wake up five minutes before work started, while many also enjoyed taking a nap during the day (36%).

In the Coupon Follow survey, the most popular work-from-home outfit was either loungewear or athletic wear. It also says that 28 percent of respondents said they're willing to take a pay cut in order to keep the casual dress code going once they're back in the office - but this was not related to revealing that they often worked naked.

The Kaspersky survey concluded that among other things, security on home PC's became important. The company recommended workers to apply a webcam cover or use built-in webcam protection in Kaspersky Security Cloud which will prevent unauthorized access to your camera.

If you are not convinced yet, here is a third independent survey: Mentimeter surveyed 1,500 Americans who are now working from home to learn more about their lifestyles and found that 12% said they often turn off their camera during a conference call because they are naked.

Twenty years ago, US home office expert Lisa Kanarek founded "Working Naked Day" and set it to be February 4th, regardless if this was a holiday already. Every year, some naturist or nudist organisations help promote the day. British Naturism pushed the idea at the height of the pandemic two years ago.

"What an opportunity to give Naturism a try in the comfort of your new workplace - at home!" BN wrote.

Always persuasive, BN told their members to strip into something more comfortable

"You'll be joining millions of people around the world who have already discovered the exhilarating freedom that comes with being naked and who have also found that their self-esteem increases as a result."

"Spread the word - see how your friends and colleagues feel about adopting #worknakedwednesday with you," the association urged.

So now it is over to you, dear NAT member, to log in and share in the comment box below if you belong to that group of between 11 percent to 29 percent of all people who enjoy working naked at home or at a naturist resort and maybe wouldn't mind if you could wear that birthday suit at the office as well.

  1. I’d not be surprised if the survey you are running indicates that a higher percentage of the members here work naked at home than the other surveys suggest, we’re naturists after all. To me it makes complete sense to work nude at home, I live nude here anyway, so I see no reason to get dressed to work here. I wish I could work nude permanently, but expectations at work mean clothing is required 🙁

The UK government is currently trying very hard to get more people back into the workplace, blaming the lack of workers in city centres on the reduced amount of business created for city shops and catering. They don’t seem to mention the probable consequential higher local spending of workers who stay at home!

    1. You are right that our replies will show a very high percentage of nude-from-home workers. I don’t think people will give up the new-found freedom of working from home – with or without clothes – but management will have to develop fast to be able to inspire remotely to keep up motivation. Not just set up strict goals and performance indexes.

      1. For sure, working from home for naturists is a bonus with the added bonus that we can do it nude, a double bonus like that will be given up very reluctantly.

I mentioned before how the UK government was trying to encourage going back to the workplace. Some government departments ordered their civil servants back to the office, this resulted in chaos, some departments had been encouraging split office/home work routines pre-Covid, i.e. the education ministry, ordering them all to the office resulted in almost twice as many workers being present than they have desks for. Joined up thinking is beyond some! It would have been nice if they’d prioritised the nude home workers returning to their homes, I somehow doubt that this was a consideration.
