INF-FNI warns of hidden camera glasses at naturist venues

The International Naturist Federation (INF-FNI) has warned its member organizations about the growing availability of smart glasses equipped with discreet video cameras that can secretly record images and video at naturist venues.

Unlike earlier wearable cameras, many of the latest smart glasses are almost indistinguishable from ordinary prescription glasses or sunglasses. They can record high-definition video and wirelessly transfer recordings to a smartphone, making it easier than ever to capture and distribute images without the knowledge of those being filmed.

The warning has prompted discussions among naturist organizations about how best to protect members’ privacy.

INF President Stéphane Deschênes believes that the primary responsibility lies with individual clubs and resorts.

“I’m not sure that it’s up to federations to do something other than awareness. It is at the club/resort level that action is necessary,” he said.

As an example, he pointed to Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park in Canada, where smart glasses with recording capability have been officially banned from the property. The resort has introduced warning signs at its entrance and trained staff to recognize the devices.

British Naturism board member Anne Nisbet welcomed the initiative and suggested that guidance on identifying such devices would provide an additional deterrent. She also asked whether anyone caught using them would be excluded from the club.

“In our case, almost certainly yes they would be banned,” Deschênes replied. “Given the signs at the entrance there’s no excuse. As an aside, they could be subject to criminal prosecution in Canada due to the surreptitious nature of the recording.”

Disraporn Yatprom, President of Naturist Association Thailand Co., Ltd. (NAT), said the warning serves as a timely reminder that privacy is one of the movement’s core values. NAT will alert its partner resorts and ask for advice how they could implement a harmonized policy for all resorts regarding the new technology.

The emergence of concealed recording devices makes it increasingly important for clubs and resorts to establish clear policies and ensure that visitors understand them before entering.
